On Reading

Today I realized two reasons why I love to read:

1: It makes me proud.

I got my car detailed today (I haven’t had a car this clean inside and out for YEARS!). While I was waiting, there were 3 men around me who were also waiting, and they were all doing something on their smartphones. I pulled out my Alice in Wonderland book and started reading where I had left off last time I was waiting for something. And yes, it made me proud to be a book reader amongst the smartphone men. Who knows, maybe they were reading a book on their smartphone (I doubt it). However, there is just something about holding a book in your hand that makes it more worthwhile.

2: One word can trigger the memory of a whole story.

I have recently (meaning last week) discovered the beauty of Panko bread crumbs. And after my car wash today I went to the grocery store and I bought pork chops (among other things). So when I got home, I looked for a recipe involving pork chops and Panko bread crumbs. Found quite a few, and decided on one after I read “No need for frying, this oven baked, lower fat pork chop recipe is delicious served with pasta and your favorite simple marinara or puttanesca sauce.”

Is it the “no need for frying” that got to me? NO.

Is it the “lower fat” that got me? NO.

Was it the “puttanesca” that got me? ABSOSTINKINLUTELY YES.

The last (and only) time I hard the word “puttanesca” was when I read A Series of Unfortunate Events. I love that series!

puttanesca

Reading the word “puttanesca” again brought back the memory of Violet, Klaus, and Sunny being forced to cook for the evil Count Olaf and making puttanesca sauce. I had never eaten it then, and I still haven’t eaten it (if I ever to make it, I am leaving out the anchovies), but what matters is that ONE WORD can bring back a whole memory of a book I have read. Like magic.

And there you have it. Two of the many reasons why I love to read.

P.S. Shout out to Texas Car Wash on Eldridge here in Houston, TX for doing a great job with my car.

P.P.S. Shout out to all the writers ever.

Dance At Least Once

Madeline and I were on our way somewhere, and we were walking through the mall. Well, the open area that is outside. There’s an ice skating rink and little bakeries and cafes. I imagine that in the spring, there will be flowers.

There was music on, and I felt like dancing! So, of course, I danced as we walked.

Madeline had a look of confusion and embarrassment on her face as she said “Sometimes I just want to pretend like I don’t even know you.”

I changed my dancing style for something else and replied “Well it’s really hard to dance with these boots on. With Converse it’s much easier.”
(I hate boots, just in case you didn’t know that. However, I am enduring them because of the snow. Hopefully it will warm up soon and I can go back to wearing Converse.)

She then moved a little further away from me and said “Thank goodness for boots!”

I was enjoying myself. But don’t worry, I didn’t torture her for long. The dancing ceased shortly thereafter. Luckily, today is not lost.

“We should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least once.”

Harry Potter Wizard’s Collection

One day my friend asked me why I don’t own the Harry Potter movies if I love them so much. I told her it was because I was waiting for the ultimate special editions to come out, in a box set, with director’s commentary and more special features and all that jazz.

My friend Kristi overheard this, and last week she emailed me this…

20131126_155627

…and said…

It’s here. The definitive collector’s edition of Harry Potter. And it’s only $150!!

Apparently it’s really important to me that you see this. .. As I’m sending it in multiple forms. And possibly multiple times. 😉

So I responded with…

I AM SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW I CAN’T EVEN HANDLE IT!!!!!!!!!!

Wait, wait…..$150 from WHERE!? Amazon says it’s $277.60!
I WILL BUY IT.
FORGET ROMANIA. FORGET IRELAND. I WILL BUY IT.
And she said…
Is at Costco my love.  Enjoy!
I was in bed that night, and these were my thoughts…
I want it so badly….it’s only $150….that’s so cheap for what it includes! I have the money, I can totally do it…but no! Stop! Chloe! You’re saving money to go to Romania and Ireland! Stop! You can’t! But this is everything I wanted and more…I’m doing it. I might feel guilty, but I am doing it.
And then I saw my wall…
photoMy five dollar savings plan!!! <–click to read more…you will love it, I promise.
And the next day….
photo (1)I was in heaven. I cried tears of joy at Costco. It’s true, just ask my cousin. She was there.

I went home and reveled in the goodness. Happiness overcame my whole self. And anyone around me, because all I could do was smile.
I only had like 15 minutes to look at it when I got home…you think it’d be enough, but it wasn’t. I had to go to work…but after work, I took a long time to go through every bit of it. It was glorious.
I went to my mom’s house for Thanksgiving and I showed my family. Their favorite part was watching how excited I was. My brother’s girlfriend even got pictures….
First you open the top for movies…

Then the sides open…

Feel goods.

Sometimes you just need to feel good about yourself.

A couple of times today, that happened to me.

1. I am the BYU ASL Club President, so I was going around to some ASL classes making an announcement about our club meetings. The first class I went to was a level 1 class, and when I got there they weren’t in the classroom…they were in the hallway! So I got on the stairs nearby and got the teacher’s attention….and she told me to just do the announcement from the stairs. I did my thing, and then she told me to stay, told me my outfit was really fun, came and stood next to me on the steps, and then proceeded to have her whole class describe my outfit. You see, describing people is something they were learning, and here I was…in a very colorful outfit, and apparently I was the perfect candidate. So I stood there for like 5 minutes as they described every detail on my outfit, down to the buckle on my hat. I did protest a bit when they said my hair is brown…I still call it blonde…but today I think I learned that yes, it has been a few years since my hair has been blonde…it’s gotten darker as I’ve gotten older…and I need to learn to accept that my hair is now brown. Oh well. Anyways, I felt pretty awesome when that teacher made me into a class assignment 🙂

oldies 024Yes, I still have boxes to unpack from moving…and like that crayon art on my wall? Click here to see how to make it!

2. I went to Costco to get gas today, and as I was getting in my car to drive off, the random guy next to me said “Hey, cool shoes.”

3. I went to Walmart tonight, and the lady at the Xfinity booth said “I like your shoes!” (I love complimenting strangers…my friend Mauri and I are VERY practiced in this…so I love it when strangers compliment me!)

4. Today I made a goal to be more social….specifically, take time to talk to a friend at least twice a week. Yes, that’s my goal…pathetic, I know. But I’m so busy I have to schedule everything, so that’s how it is. Then, not even 2 hours after I made that goal, I saw 3 people I know while I was at Walmart! Destiny, Liz, and Liz! I chatted with Destiny for a few minutes, then she was like “I’ll let you go, I know you’re busy.” And then when I ran into her again (good thing I didn’t actually RUN INTO her…that’d be unfortunate), I was thinking “OK, Chloe…your goal…chat more!” And I’m so glad I did.

So, friends, if you see me, make me talk to you. Seriously.

So remember when I said earlier that sometimes you just need to feel good about yourself? In a nutshell, here’s what did it for me today:

1. Spontaneously becoming a class assignment.
2. A compliment from a stranger.
3. A compliment from a stranger.
4. Working to achieve my goal and catching up with a friend.

Paying Rent Through Service

I was walking home today, through a building on BYU campus, and I saw this…

bookstore 005And I was like “YES!!!! My new motto!!!”

Who is N. Eldon Tanner?
Nathan Eldon Tanner was a politician from the Canadian province of Alberta.

Where is this thing found?
This can be found at the Tanner Building on BYU campus. This building houses the Marriott School of Management, and at the groundbreaking, Tanner was recognized as “an exemplar of the arts of management … and as an appropriate role model for our students in management.” (see this article)

BYU is a religious school…where does N. Eldon Tanner come in?
Tanner was a business leader for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

So let’s get back to the quote…
“Service is the rent we pay for living in this world of ours.” I love service! For the past 2 years, I have made an effort to make service a big part of my life, and I feel I have succeeded. Service has blessed my life beyond measure. SERIOUSLY. And now, I have a new favorite quote!

bookstore 006

Now what?
Now, go out and pay rent!

(if only service could pay the rent for my apartment…)

Thank you, Nathan Eldon Tanner, for the inspiration. And thank you to the incredible sculptor who made this…

Be Aware

So I was walking on BYU campus one day a few months ago. I was by the MCKB (McKay Building), which is where I used to basically live, because 90% of my classes were there.

Anyways, I saw this construction truck parked on the sidewalk…

downsized_0522130937And I thought “Really? You couldn’t pick one side or the other? How’s a wheelchair supposed to get through comfortably? Or someone carrying a large box?”

So I got out a sticky note, and wrote something….

downsized_0522130936

In case you can’t read that, it says “Please consider parking on one side of the walkway as opposed to the middle. That would make it easier for wheelchairs to get by. Have a great day! Thanks! -an accessibility-aware citizen”

I put it on the windshield of the truck and went on my own merry way.

THE NEXT DAY…..

downsized_0523131237It was parked on one side of the pathway!

THE DAY AFTER THAT….

downsized_0529131233It was again parked on one side only!

I guess my note worked : )
